Stomach Pain
The interesting thing about stomach pain is that it's clearly a digestive issue -- food sensitivities, stress affecting the digestion, hiatal hernia torturing the digestion, lack of sufficient digestive juices to do the job, etc. When Jolynn came to me complaining about stomach pain, bloat and constipation with stress from being recently "early retired," it looked like a classic case of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, after treating her for that with acupuncture and herbs she had only small gains, none of which was very long-lived, and it seemed that something else must be going on. We had discussed her diet and possible food triggers including the usual culprits -- wheat and dairy -- but she didn't make any connection between her food, her pain and her bowels except stress, which there was a lot of. I encouraged her to change her eating habits just to see if certain foods were triggers, but she didn't want to.
Due to the stress, she had gained about 20 pounds that she wanted to lose and, since I offer a terrifically successful weight loss program, she signed on. She balked at giving up her favorite food -- breads -- but after we talked decided she could do it for the 5 weeks of the program. The weeks went by, she followed the program religiously, and lost the expected weight. At her week 4 visit, she had a confession. "You know how much I like wheat bread and how hard it has been for me to give it up, right?" I nodded. "Well, since I started the weight loss program, I haven't had any stomach pain or bloat and my bowels are fine. Last night, I had a roll when we were out to dinner, and guess what? Today I have the pain!"
Well, that said volumes. Since the T360 diet plan has elimination of wheat, dairy, and other common food sensitivities at its base, she discovered a valuable lesson. She can't eat current-day wheat products. Hers was not gluten intolerance, however, because she could eat many other things with gluten so her gut pain was from the wheat. So she solved the problems of overweight, discomfort, and constipation by learning what foods her body will not tolerate and happily avoiding them to stay feeling well. And lose weight in the process!
